The Sinless Woerm

... why won't you share your pronouns? Its really a great allyship tool to share your pronouns, because that way trans and nonbinary people don't have to out themselves when telling their pronouns!

I love that you think I’m cis.

A collection of reasons you are not entitled to other people’s pronouns, no matter how progressive you try to make it sound:

  • Trans people who are still closeted may not want to list their pronouns in case someone they know in person should find their blog (perhaps through selfies, specific anecdotes posted, or even just being nosy and looking at their open laptop). The only safe alternative would be to misgender themselves, thus encouraging others to refer to them as such, which obviously is not great.
  • Feminine aligned people in a male-dominated field and vice versa are easier to track down if they post their pronouns, even more so if they are openly trans/genderqueer and use more unique pronouns.
  • Posting she/her pronouns will often invite people to talk down to you or send sexually aggressive messages. Posting he/him pronouns will often make people perceive you as predatory in certain spaces as well as conceited in general. Posting neo-pronouns will often lead to transphobic harassment and people undermining your posts and questioning your qualifications.
  • If there is anything indicating you are trans, people who dislike you will intentionally misgender you to try and give their hate messages more of a bite to them.
  • Some people just genuinely do not want to share any personal information with strangers online, which is generally not a bad thing.
  • People who are still questioning their gender may not have found which pronouns feel right yet.
  • It is none of your business.

While it can be nice to know someone’s pronouns, not every person is happy to advertise them. Knowing a person’s pronouns is not a requirement, but respecting their decision to share or not share them with you is.

Good example of how a trend or movement can be good and helpful in general and a very nice thing to do, but it isn’t good or helpful to insist that specific individuals do it. Encourage the trend, make sure the info aboout why its important is spread, and don’t correct people.
