The Voluptuarian Wolfess
The more I watch this movie, the more I am amazed by how perfectly Lynn Collins was cast for Dejah Thoris.  She’s probably the best version we’re ever going to see.  The additions they made to her character for the movie are fantastic — they made her an ass-kicking science geek princess, dry and arch and unashamedly eyefucking the shit out of Taylor Kitsch’s John Carter.  She gave the role depth that it lacked.  It makes me ache for the stories that will never get told.
I have great affection for John, but I’m convinced there’s so much to Dejah’s story that we don’t know, and never will, because it fell into the background.  Burroughs was a white dude telling a white dude’s story, and I’m sure it never occurred to him.  She lived her own impressive as hell life until she was suddenly cast into the shadow of a stranger to her world, and whatever she was before he came just … blew away like sand.
I wish we could have had a tale about her, just her: Dejah Thoris, Jeddara of Jeddaras.  And maybe Kantos Kan.  (Again, the movie version wins out: brave and loyal and deeply in love with her without setting so much as one red toe into jealous, entitled Nice Guy territory.  Thank you, James Purefoy, for being thoughtful enough to pull that off.)
I hope that someday she gets a verse in Seanan’s “Wicked Girls Saving Ourselves.”  Every one of those verses is like spitting in the eye of the narratives that spite and fail us.

This was a criminally under-appreciated movie for so many reasons. Thank you for adding another really great reason.
